Successful random contact for Gruppo Scout Florence 8, Italy with Paolo Nespoli IZØJPA

Sunday October 22, 2017 at 13:38 UTC, which is 15:38 UTC CEST Gruppo Scout Florence 8, Firenze, Italy established random contact with ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA onboard the International Space Station.

This was a direct contact performed by Amateur radio ground station II5BP located at Firenze, Italy.

For over 30 years, Florence 8 scout group has always had a particular interest in the radio, in fact the jamboree on the air has become a very important event for the group.
the desire to learn new things for what concerns the world of radio you start to stimulate the group with new activities, this year's jamboree we simulated the connection with the ISS orbiting above our heads.
this year has been for our group a very important year because 16 guys have managed to take the amateur radio license.
given the interest that I created in the boys with the connection simulation with iss I noticed a very good ground for developing this type of transmission expand theoretical knowledge to those practices. I do it because I know that the technical and practical preparation around the scout group.
our group 'made up of about 100 members ranging from ages 8 and up, in those days, our group will be able to open the doors without any problems with other neighbors scout groups.
Surely the kids will be thrilled to be able to talk to astronauts understand their work on the station, and catch the excitement of seeing the earth from up there, certainly the questions given the limited time will
be short. Finally, I think it's a mid highly coveted by our group and certainly a dream that kids will live with open eyes.

The random contact was established at 13:38 UTC with IZØJPA via II5BP, using the Kenwood Radio in the Russian Service Module. During the random contact ESA Astronaut Paolo Nespoli answered 8 questions by scout. Signals from the ISS were loud and clear during the whole pass.

About 100 scout attended the event. The contact was also put on Facebook as a live stream.
