Successful contact for Tallaght Community School, Ireland with Paolo Nespoli IZØJPA

Thursday October 19, 2017 at 12.49 UTC, which is 14.49 CEST students at Tallaght Community School, Dublin, Ireland established ARISS contact with ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA onboard the International Space Station.

This was a direct contact performed by Amateur radio ground station EI1ISS, located at Tallaght Community School, Dublin.

School Information:

Tallaght Community School is located in Dublin city in Ireland. The school was chosen for the event as it is in a disadvantaged area and the school works hard to prepare and encourage students to pursue  some form of further education. The school has 900 students aged 12 to 18 years and all will take part in the event. All students have studied about the ISS and were given an opportunity to submit questions to be selected.

The scheduled contact was established at 12.49 UTC with OR4ISS via EI1ISS, using the Kenwood Radio in the Russian Service Module. During the scheduled contact ESA Astronaut Paolo Nespoli answered 17 questions by students. Signals from the ISS were loud and clear during the whole pass. This contact was to be a Telebridge contact with Sandö gymnasium in Sweden but for technical reasons Sandö Gymnasium will be re-scheduled for a new ARISS contact in 2018.

About 800 people attended the event. The event was covered by 2 radio station and newspapers. The contact was also put on YouTube as a live stream.
