Saturday October 5, 2013 at 11:37UTC, which is 13:37 CEST, Polska Akademia Dzieci (Polish Academy of Kids) and Language Laboratories, School of Genius (SG) established an ARISS contact with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano KF5KDP operating with ISS callsign NA1SS. It was telebridge contact operated by Amateur radio club station W6SRJ, located in Santa Rosa, California.


This was the third ARISS contact (two direct) performed by SP2ZIE amateur radio club "Szkuner" from Gdynia.


Language Laboratories, School of Genius (SG), is one of the first language schools in Poland (est. in 1968).


The Project Polish Academy of Kids is the first university run by kids on an international scale, where Young Scientists can freely choose their field of scientific interest. Lecturers are from 6 to 20 years old and examine magnetic levitation, the missing links of vertebrates’ evolution or dogs, cats and insects. For more details visit website:


Polish Academy of Kids was nominated Science Populariser 2011 and 2012 in the contest organised by Science and Scholarship in Poland (Polish Press Agency and Ministry of Science and Higher Education).


Gedania is a sport club located in Gdansk, Hallera 201 street. It was one of the first sport clubs in Poland.


At 11:00 UTC, moderator Gaston Bertels ON4WF, Chairman of ARISS-Europe, called Gdansk, where Jedrzej Marsz  SQ2DK was operator. The Moderator established connection with amateur radio club W6SRJ, where Tim Bosma W6MU and Bill Hillendahl, KH6GJV were operating the ARISS ground station located in Santa Rosa Junior College, California, USA.


ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, operating the amateur radio station aboard the ISS Columbus module, established radio connection with the ARISS ground station in Santa Rosa at 11:37 UTC. The astronaut answered 14 of the 15 questions prepared by children from orphanage in Kartuzy and selected School of Genius children. The conversation with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano KF5KDP was conducted in English.


Audio was excellent and the signal from the ISS was loud and clear on 145.800MHz FM over western  USA.

The contact was also broadcast on EchoLink AMSAT (node 101 377) and JK1ZRW (node

277 208) Conference servers, as well as on IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010 thanks to John Spasojevitsch, AG9D in Montgomery, Illinois.


The event was covered by two world-wide and one national TV stations: TVP Polonia, TVN 24, TVP (Polish Public Television) and TVP INFO. TVP reported about this event in two very important Polish  news programs: Teleexpress (in the afternoon) and Panorama (in the evening).


Over 380 children, parents and teachers and representatives from media and VIPs were present in Gedania sport club to watch this event live.
