Successful contact for Meadows Elementary School, Manhattan Beach, CA, USA with Paolo Nespoli IZØJPA

Friday September 8, 2017 at 17:05 UTC pupils at Meadows Elementary School, Manhattan Beach, CA, USA established ARISS contact with ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA onboard the International Space Station.

This was a direct contact performed by Amateur radio ground station KM6BWB, located at the school in Manhattan Beach, CA, USA.

School Information:

Meadows Elementary is located in Manhattan Beach, California, about 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Manhattan Beach is a small coastal community- about 36,000 residents, but located close to LAX, giving it a lot of international visitors. It is also located near SpaceX (10 miles), Northrop-Grumman (2 miles), and Boeing Satellite Systems (4 miles), making the area a huge push in the aerospace industry.

Meadows Elementary is one of 7 schools (5 elementary) in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. Meadows Elementary is a Kindergarten-5th grade school with about 450 students. While not incredibly diverse, with 62% white, 12% Asian, and 12% Hispanic students, 15% of its students are on an Individualized Education Plan or IEP, to deal with learning difficulties.  The campus has a Math Olympiad after-school program that consistently places in the top 5 in LA County, a hands-on science program for all students K-5 during the school day, and a library for every student to access every week with their classroom.

The scheduled contact was established at 17:05 UTC with NA1SS via KM6BWB, within 10-20 seconds of predicted AOS, using the Kenwood Radio in the Russian Service Module. During the scheduled contact ESA Astronaut Paolo Nespoli answered 21 questions, and additional 2 by students. The school actually went to their backup list of questions since they ran out. There was plenty of time for a nice greeting before the LOS. Signals from the ISS were loud and clear during the whole pass.

About 500 people attended the event. The event was covered by 2 newspapers. The contact was also put on YouTube as a live stream.
